Born in British Columbia in Canada on November 16th, 1964, Diana Krall is widely regarded as one of the foremost modern female jazz performers. Krall is both a vocalist and a pianist, and very often combines the two in her gigs. Krall has won numerous awards and accolades for her work - most notably, perhaps she is the only jazz singer to have had 8 albums debuting at the top of Billboard's list of jazz albums. She is also one of the best selling music artists (not just jazz artists) of all time. This is no doubt one of the reasons why, in 2009, Billboard named her as being the number two female jazz artist in the years 2000-2009. In addition, Krall has won no less than eight Juno Awards and three prestigious Grammy Awards. Krall displayed her ability as a jazz performer from an early age, as she started playing the piano when she was just 4 years old and then moved on to performing in a local restaurant at 15 years of age. Krall's first album, released in 1993, was entitled Stepping Stones, and she recorded it alongside Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton. Stepping Stones was very well received and it was quickly followed up in 1995 with a single called Only Trust Your Heart and another album, All For You (which was designed as a dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio). As of 2017, Krall has released 14 albums and singles. The latest is called Turn Up The Quiet and was released in 2017. She is married to another musician, Elvis Costello, and they have children together. To mark the success of Krall's career, the main plaza in the town where she was born and grew up (Nanaimo) was renamed and is now called Diana Krall Plaza.
